In the New York Times article “The Suburbs Are Coming to a City Near You”, by Candace Jackson, the advantages and disadvantages of living in the suburb are explained. Besides, Mr. Jackson asks “if is a city if urban living is a luxury good”? My comment about the Brazilian experience in living in the suburb was gently replied by Ted, from Portland, and I treaded as well. I present the dialogue.

ARS. Living in medium and large Brazilian cities is a terrible problem because of traffic. We lose more than one to three hours a day just for commuting from home to work and vice versa. I imagine this is not a problem for developed and organized American cities
Ted. Hi Ribeiro, your guess would be wrong, American cities can have horrible traffic problems. I remember my significant other Katherine, leaving her garage in the S.O.M.A. area of San Francisco over a decade ago, getting stuck in the backup to the bay bridge traffic in commute time and calling me from her cell phone as she was afraid she would run out of gas before getting back into her garage, an hour plus trip to get around the block. My commute from San Francisco to San Mateo could often take an hour or more (to go nineteen miles on the freeway in non rush hour traffic). I had highly paid clients at S. R. I. who commuted four hours a day to Silicon Valley so they might be able to afford a home for their family of six, when they retired a few years ago they moved back to Europe. America isn’t Brazil yet but we’re working on it.
ARS. Thank you for the enlightening comment. So sorry. If you didn’t, good to read “A Short Story of Man: Progres and Decline”, by Hermann-Hans Hoppe. He adresses fundamental questions, including sociology and ethics, and presents a highly challenging vision of human economic development. Maybe we should know, think and act. In the upshot, “only the changing is permanent” (Heraclitus, 360 a. C.)
